ADLs Regional Director Visits Hingham High

Davis Goode, Editor-in-Chief

On Monday, October 20th, over 30 student facilitators for the Anti-Defamation League attended the first of two half-day training sessions with ADL’s Regional Director, Phil Fogelman, in room 103. The second session will be held on November 7th of this year. Mr. Fogelman reinforced the mission of ADL, gave student facilitators useful tips on future facilitations, and ran activities to appreciate diversity and acceptance. The program lasted for four hours and was designed to enrich students’ understanding of what exactly a facilitation should look like.

Mr. Fogelman has been involved in the program for over 16 years and has visited hundreds of schools. He remarked that the Hingham program is more intensive than the programs he has seen in other school systems, most of which consist of after-school training rather than in-school elective class devoted to ADL training. ADL facilitators plan to implement the tools Mr. Fogelman demonstrated in this year’s facilitations.

For 100 years A.D.L. has been devoted to fighting anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry through programs and services bridging diverse communities. ADL’s educational program, the A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE Institute, was established to combat prejudice and foster intergroup understanding in schools, colleges, and work sites. Through diversity training programs in schools, teachers and students alike learn techniques and strategies to challenge prejudice and promote intergroup understanding. Lessons and curricula developed by ADL’s A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE Institute are the cornerstone of Hingham High School’s Student Facilitator Program, a program whose aim is to assist in the school wide effort to promote a safe, welcoming school climate for all.
