Girls Learn International

Rose McDonald, Contributing Writer

Hingham High School welcomes Girls Learn International to its wide variety of clubs. GLI’s main mission among many is to raise awareness of the lack of education for girls in foreign countries. GLI believes that by educating women you can educate a whole community and generations after her. According to GLI’s mission statement, the organization hopes to “movement of informed advocates for universal girls’ education and a new generation of leaders and activists for social change”. However, the club is not just limited to that topic. At the meetings a mix of topics will be covered. Students will discuss human rights issues including modern slavery and other injustices placed upon men, women, and children. These student led discussions are meant to broaden members’ knowledge on global issues that are present in today’s society. Using these topics, GLI, at the end of the year, holds a fundraiser to support schools internationally. The money helps pay for supplies, repair school buildings, or a child’s tuition.

The club’s members interact with fellow GLI students across America as well as with students across the globe. Next year Hingham’s club will partner with another school in countries like India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, and Tanzania. Once partnered with a school, the club will raise money and have constant communication with them. By having this partner school the club will learn about the international school’s culture and have a direct impact on improving girl’s education.

The meetings for GLI are every Tuesday in the ceramics room. To find out more about GLI the website is girlslearn.net.
