Hingham High Students Attend National History Day Competition

On Saturday, March 12th, several students from the junior class attended the South Shore District National History Day Competition.  The event took place at Brockton High School and many schools from the South Shore were in attendance.

The National History Day Competition consists of two divisions, Junior and Senior.  The Junior Division is composed of grades six through eight, and the Senior Division is composed of grades nine through twelve.   Each division has the same nine categories: historical paper, individual documentary, group documentary, individual performance, group performance, individual website, group website, individual exhibit, and group exhibit.

At the South Shore District Competition, each category had three judges that evaluated the various projects and determined the awards. Hingham High’s Ms. O’Connor, Mr. Loucheim, and Mr. Hoey served as judges in the Junior Division.  The first, second, and third place finisher from each category will compete at the State Contest on April 9th at Bedford High School.

As a part of the A.P. U.S. History class at Hingham High School, students prepared a research project and were then selected to enter the competition.  The students were advised by their teachers, Ms. O’Connor, Mrs. Petrie, and Mrs. Dwyer, when creating the projects.  Hingham students participated in the Historical Paper, Individual Documentary, Group Documentary, and Individual Performance categories.

Hingham students had a very successful day at the competition.  In Individual Performance, Stephanie Pett took First Place with her performance about suffragette Alice Paul.  Stephanie says that she “could not be more excited to take this project to the next round”.  In Individual Documentary, Lexi Linton came in Second Place and Rose Flynn took Third Place.  Hingham swept Group Documentary as Shannon Donovan and Bailey Nghiem came in First Place, Zach Lytle and Kyle Sutton came in Second Place, and Julianna Fenton and Clare Oatway came in Third Place.  Lastly, in Historical Paper, Rachel Jensen came in Second Place and Angela White got an Honorable Mention.  As previously stated, all students who placed in first, second, or third will move on to compete at the state level.
