To Kill A Mocking Bird Sequel to in the Works

Rose McDonald, Contributing Writer

55 years ago, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee was released to a divided America. The novel engaged the nation and opened people’s eyes to the horror and injustices of racism in the law. Today the main character, Scout, still teaches young students to understand the struggles of the
civil rights movement and respect everyone, no matter what they look like.

Harper Lee created a mysterious persona about herself, never releasing any other stories besides To Kill a Mockingbird. Her vast fan base have been wondering and hoping for years whether Lee would release another novel. Finally, prayers have been answered just when America needs it most.

Tonja Brooks Carter, Lee’s Lawyer, was skimming through some old papers when she found a manuscript of Go Set a Watchman. The novel set 20 years after To Kill a Mockingbird, making Scout a grown woman. This book was originally written before To Kill a Mockingbird and included Scout having numerous flashbacks to her childhood. Lee’s editor at the time believed she should write a separate novel just about Scout’s childhood resulting in To Kill a Mockingbird.

With the announcement of Go Set a Watchman being published, many people are skeptical of Carter’s intention. Lee being 88 years old, nearly blind and deaf, has caused people to believe that Carter is taking advantage of Lee. However Lee is greatly offended by these claims and
released a statement saying, “’I’m alive and kicking and happy as hell with the reactions of Watchman.”

Go Set a Watchman is set to be released on July 15, 2015. The novel has already found its way to number one best seller on Amazon in the books section.
