On February 12, 2016, Tesla Motors has its grand opening at Derby Street Shoppes in Hingham.

The Derby Street Shoppes in Hingham, Massachusetts, has 65 restaurants and stores that have been visited by the surrounding residents for as long as it has been open. Recently, the Derby Street Shoppes decided to change their image by replacing many original stores with pricier ones. Some of the new stores are Tobey Grey, Sephora, Kate Spade, Anthropologie, David’s Tea, and Tesla.

Many view the Tesla store and other openings as a way to add variety. Sophomore Ellie Holler spoke for many when when she said, “That Tesla place is super dope.”

Change isn’t always a bad thing. Students say they love the incoming stores and are extremely excited. Ashley Longo, a senior at Hingham High School, says, “I’m definitely going to still shop there, I love all the stores. I think they made great additions like Sephora and David’s Tea.” Although it is hard to see Express leaving, Ashley is welcoming the new stores.

On the other hand, not everyone agrees with the changes. Sophomores like Sarah Decola and Mary Laine believe the changes are unnecessary. Mary Laine stated, “It’s turning into the Braintree Plaza.” She is excited for Anthropologie to move in, but believes most of the stores are too expensive now. Sarah Decola feels that there are already enough restaurants and clothing stores. The new stores just aren’t needed.

Surprisingly, the changes at the shop new news to some students like Bridget Mcgonagle, wjo said “I didn’t even know there was new business”.

The shops raised the rent, leaving stores like GameStop, Children’s Place, and AZ Studios no choice but to relocate outside of the Derby Street Shoppes. According to the students interviewed, they felt that as long as stores like Chipotle, Panera, Lululemon’s, American Eagle, and Barnes & Nobles remained, they will continue to visit the Derby Street Shoppes.
