This year has hosted a multitude of outstanding films, one of which is the much anticipated Dune: Part Two. Directed by visionary filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, this sequel takes viewers on an epic journey once again after the highly acclaimed Dune film in 2021. The Dune films are an adaptation of the 1965 science fiction novel Dune which was written by Frank Herbert, and it is constantly being described as one of the best-selling science fiction pieces of all time. So even though Villenuve had a high standard to keep up, he succeeded in his two films, which have been raved about by the public. Celebrities such as Timothee Chalmet and Zendaya have made this movie even more popular.
The film is set in a very distant future, one in which noble families control different planets and a substance known as “spice” has great value. The plot follows Paul Atreides as he struggles with his own destiny as “the chosen one”. Paul must navigate through politics, alliances, and the ever-looming threat of the mysterious force named the “Bene Gesserit”. With the film’s breathtaking visuals and entertaining narrative, the movie explores various themes of power, destiny, and the basis of human nature in relation to the entirety of the universe.
Ever since Dune:Part Two was released on March first, it has received widespread acclaim from both critics and the common audience. Many say its visuals are unmatched, and it is being praised by the science fiction community as a success. Villeneuve has also been applauded for bringing Herbet’s unique world to life on the big screen. This film has definitely secured its rightful place for the must-see films of the year.
Senior James Flynn, a movie-lover, states his opinion on the film as “I think it’s one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made, and the cinematography is some of the best I’ve ever seen. I thought Austin Butler was great in this movie and I’m really looking forward to seeing the next one”. As seen from Flynn’s praise, Dune:Part Two is surpassing many’s expectations.
Similarly to Flynn’s opinion, HHS student and sophomore, Ani Alessi, said that she, “Loved the movie. I saw it last week with my friends and I’m not a movie buff but I thought it was very very good. The scenes were very satisfying and entertaining to watch”.
Personally, I loved the movie. I believe it exceeded all expectations. The film is visually stunning and the narrative is excellent and riveting. Villeneuve immerses the audience into a world unlike our own, one full of danger and mystery. I think Timothee Chalamet’s performance was amazing and deeply portrayed the emotional turmoil of Paul Atreides. Overall, I recommend this new film for anyone who likes a movie with that Star Wars sort of feel.
