This past Saturday the Hingham High School GSA hosted the 3rd annual queer prom in the gym. The dance was attended by about 80 students from across the South Shore and Hingham High’s very own comfort dog, Opry.
The dance featured rainbow lighting, music, food, and games. Officer Ramsey, the DARE teacher at Hingham Middle School, DJed the dance, playing iconic queer songs from “I Kissed a Girl” by Katy Perry to “It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls. The GSA purchased games of all types, including board games like Scrabble, Operation, and cards. They also provided oversized versions of the beloved games, Tic Tac Toe, Connect 4, and checkers. Everyone in attendance sported unique and prideful outfits, some even including the individual’s pride flag. Tables with colored tablecloths and pride themed centerpieces lined the sides of the gym, which was divided in half.
The GSA provided Panera Bread sandwiches, cake, cookies, pizza, and beverages, which were enjoyed by many.
“It was awesome, so awesome. I danced my little heart out and hung out with all the freshmen. The best part for me was the grilled chicken avocado BLT.” says GSA leader Luka Belleville. The festivities lasted from 7-10pm, with the cake being brought out at about 8.
After sundown, the colorful and spectacular lighting bought by the GSA really shined, giving the gym a distinctly queer and energetic feel. Most attendees took to the stage during this time, even participating in group dances like the Cupid Shuffle and Cotton Eyed Joe. “
It was like a movie,” states HHS GSA member and attendee to the queer prom, Fiona Hogan, “I danced my little heart out. Opry was definitely the best part.” The HHS comfort dog, Opry and her handler Officer Ford were both in attendance, with Officer Ford leading the Cupid Shuffle and Opry wearing rainbow wings and a rainbow bandana. In conclusion, this year’s South Shore Queer prom was a fun and memorable experience for all involved. The GSA is thankful for all who sponsored the prom, allowing tickets to be free. The South Shore queer community looks forward to next year!
