On August 14, 2024, the Hingham School Committee selected Kathryn (Katie) Roberts, former Assistant Superintendent, as the interim superintendent for the Hingham Public Schools district. However, many students do not know much about her, or our past superintendents in general. It is extremely important for students to get to know their leaders so they can be aware of and advocate for their needs in the HPS community.
When asked if she knew who the new superintendent was, HHS sophomore Izzi Puleo was not sure, but she added, “I’m really excited to see how she improves the school system.” Similarly, freshman Katie Post added, “I know she helped with science and I’ve seen her in my classroom. I can’t wait to see what more she does!” Overall, HHS students should know more about the new superintendent, as she plays a critical role in the success of our school system.
Although just starting the job recently, Katie Roberts already has many plans for her leadership for HPS. “HPS is coming off of a period of significant change and transition for our district,” says Roberts, “Therefore, I see the aspects of this interim role as falling into three main buckets.” She continues, “my primary role during this interim year is to ensure that HPS continues to serve students by providing a safe, supportive, inclusive, and enriching learning environment and to build/rebuild relationships with students, staff, families, and the broader community.” Everybody can agree that a sense of community and inclusivity is vital for a successful transition year for HPS.
Furthermore, “A second aspect of the interim role is to maintain momentum on initiatives from our 2022-2025 strategic plan and finish out the work on these on-going projects. A third aspect of the role, and an aspect that I am particularly excited about, is to work with our community to develop our vision for the next three-year cycle of strategic planning (2025-2028)” She poses the question, “How can we continue to evolve and grow our programs to ensure that all students thrive?” and she will be “sharing some opportunities for students, staff and families to participate in this important conversation” over the course of the next few weeks. Asking questions is a crucial part of the planning process, and hearing from the people of HPS allows for a more community-oriented plan. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that I am excited to see what Mrs. Roberts does with the school district this upcoming year!
When asked about one interesting fact that Hingham students might not know, Katie Roberts responded, “over the course of my 28 years as an educator and administrator in the district, I have had the opportunity to teach in every building and at every grade level.” She continues, “I began my career as a middle school life science teacher, then served as an elementary science specialist, then taught at the high school level. Having that first-hand experience working with each of the age groups of students has really helped me in my current role and informs my decision-making.” Mrs. Roberts’ experience with every grade and school is an extremely valuable asset to the Hingham community as she understands what it is like to teach in the wide variety of learning environments in Hingham public schools.
Additionally, after her first month or so on the job, Roberts most enjoys, “being out in buildings and in our community making connections with students, staff and families.” Since Mrs. Roberts lives with her family here in Hingham, she has the “unique opportunity to make deep connections and be a part of the fabric of the community. A note to HHS students reading this article–please invite me to club events and other activities!” You heard it here first, Mrs. Roberts is invested in coming to as many school-related events as possible, so make sure to invite her to anything you can!
