Hingham girls’ soccer is a team that has been good for a long time, and they look to continue with that success this year, even with them losing players such as Resse Pompeo, Ava Varholak, Claire Murray, and other seniors from the class of 2024. They still have high hopes for this season as there are many returning playmakers including senior captains Grace Maroney, Meghan O’Neil, Hadley Bello, and Reese Testa. Along with them, they have secured themselves a new head coach, April Tremante.
The team started their season in not the greatest fashion, losing their first game against North Quincy 2-1. Following that loss, they went 1-0-1 going into their home game against Plymouth North. In the first 20 minutes of the game, there was already one goal scored from each team with Hingham’s goal being from captain Grace Maroney. Aside from the two goals, Maroney played as a valuable attacker throughout the whole game and was a vital piece of their success in that half. Grace was not the only player who had a dominating first half, as goalkeeper Abigail Griffin made back-to-back saves that helped their team overall. To start the second half, Hingham came out blazing as they had a corner kick from freshman Rachel Oliwa go to sophomore Amelia Greiner to score to make the game 2-1. In the sixty-second minute, sophomore Hannah Lasch came driving down the field to give Hingham an even stronger lead making it 3-1. Although the game was going well, one of their stars, Taylor Bello, encountered a yellow card and broke her wrist. In the final minutes of the game, Plymouth North cut Hingham’s lead down to one with a goal. Only a few minutes after that, sophomore Maeve Maroney brought their lead back to two and made the final score 4-2 which also brought their record to 2-1-1.
Following the game, I was able to get to know Hingham’s new head coach, April Tremante. April is from a small Connecticut town and was talented enough to get a scholarship offer from Boston College where she played soccer. April’s love for the game has been with her for a long time as she told me, “I have loved soccer since I was born.” Prior to coaching at Hingham, she coached at Duxbury High School for two years. When asked about her goals for this year she said, “to keep improving” and they certainly showed that in their game against Plymouth North.
