POCA, also known as People of Color & Allies, is an invaluable club offered at Hingham High School for students who want to engage in meaningful discussion and learn more about the experiences of people of color. Founded by students for students, POCA offers a supportive, open environment for individuals of all backgrounds to connect and reflect on modern-day events related to racial and cultural identity.
Taylor Saitow, the co-president of POCA, says the primary mission of POCA is to provide a safe and welcoming space for students to share their thoughts, concerns, and experiences. Taylor states, “Our goal has always been to foster a welcoming space for all of our club members, regardless of race, ethnicity, or any other orientation.” This commitment to inclusivity makes POCA a unique and vital space for both students of color and allies to reflect on pressing issues that occur today.
Another main draw of the club is its ability to spark meaningful group discussions ,with co-president Grace Ji emphasizing, “Group discussion about topical events is always better with more people, more opinions, and more voices.” POCA’s monthly “check-ins” offer additional support, allowing students to voice personal concerns privately to the executive board and get advice that they need. Grace also notes that sometimes students find it easier to discuss sensitive topics with others who share similar experiences. This peer-led environment creates an atmosphere where individuals feel comfortable expressing themselves openly, without judgment.
In addition to educational discussions, POCA’s meetings are interactive and fun. Grace Ji shared that meetings often feature hands-on activities, such as decorating ornaments or creating posters to display on the club’s bulletin board. These creative activities foster a sense of community and help make the club an enjoyable experience for all members.
Through its focus on education, support, and community-building, POCA is making a meaningful impact on the students who participate. It offers a platform for dialogue, helping students navigate the complexities of race and culture in today’s world. For those interested in joining, POCA is always welcoming new members, ensuring that everyone has a place in the school.
