The Hingham High School Wind Ensemble is a group of hard-working musicians committed to making amazing music and is the highest-level band at school. However, the conductor and band director, Mr. Cincotta, thinks that more is needed: They must build a culture.
Mr. Cincotta explains what kind of culture he wants to construct: “This year in Band, we are hoping to foster a culture where students are more eager to be ambassadors for our program in the greater community, both in school and beyond. The Class of 2025 sat down with me last spring to envision the kind of environment they’d like to cultivate for their peers, and it became immediately apparent that both strengthening our connections to each other (through social events, shared experiences, mentorship, increased time working in small groups, etc.) and our connections to the outside world (through more frequent public performances, searching for outreach opportunities, becoming a more visible presence at school, etc.) would be at the heart of what they’d like to accomplish. We invite everyone to come witness that renewed spirit at our Winter Concert on Tuesday, December 10th at 7:00 pm in the auditorium.” The band has been working hard to meet these goals and has already seen progress. When asked about how band affects our culture, freshman Will Monty said, “It’s definitely an important part of our school community.” He is not a member of the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, or Jazz Band.
Hingham bands are not just all work and no play, it is also an enjoyable experience that brightens everyone’s day. Mr. Cincotta’s cheerful disposition and good-natured personality lead to productive rehearsals. It is also a great opportunity to make new friends. Just ask freshman percussionist Ben Ferguson. “Band has brought me closer together with so many other people. I have met a ton of friends who are not in my grade but also who are in my grade.” Band can also be an escape from the stress of school. He went on to say, “It’s helped me calm down a little bit, sometimes I’ll just play music to deal with some work that I have to do.” Ben, along with many other members of the Wind Ensemble, is a member of the evening jazz band program. Rehearsal is every Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. The material is very advanced and it is an honor to be a part of the band. Even though it is only once a week, the Jazz Band is just as tight knit as the Wind Ensemble. When asked about evening programs, Ben said, “It’s like a small family.”
