Over 720,000 people die by suicide in the world every year. It is the third leading cause of death among people aged 15-24. Suicide is a pandemic across our world and as of recently, within our own town. This is why Hingham parents Tamara Shape and Julie Hamilton are conducting the South Shore Out of the Darkness Walk to Prevent Suicide this Saturday, September 21st in Bare Cove Park. The walk funds the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and their larger goal of spreading awareness regarding suicide and comforting those affected by it.
The walk will commence at 9 am and all are welcomed and encouraged to participate. The event itself has already touched the hearts of many town members. Not the least of which being Charlie Shape, son of the race’s co-founder, Tamara Shape. When asked about the significance of the race, Charlie stated, “The walk raises awareness for a rising conflict in our area and all the proceeds go to The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.” Additionally on a town-wide scale, the Hingham Select Board proclaimed Tuesday, September 10th as Suicide Prevention Day, and the entire month of September as Suicide Prevention Month in Hingham. The Select Board commends that the town of Hingham is “committed to the well-being and mental health of residents,” said Liz Klein, a Hingham selectboard member.
Klein also remarked, “I encourage all residents to participate in this meaningful event. Together, we can foster a community where mental health is prioritized and every individual feels valued and supported.” The walk managed to collect upwards of 90,000 dollars toward the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, surpassing their goal of 45,000 dollars. As for attendance, around 400 people showed up and participated in the walk. The mass attendance as well as the overwhelming amount of donated money serve as representations of how our community can come together in times of need. Suicide has affected so many families across the world, the United States, Massachusetts, and most of all, Hingham. However small acts and events such as this are turning the tide against suicide and supplying individuals across the globe with the help that they need.
