Every year on the week of Homecoming, HHS holds a school wide spirit week. The students are ecstatic when presented with the opportunity to create wacky, stylish outfits to fit funky themes. These outfits not only display the students’ pride for the school, but also demonstrate their creativity when producing something to wear that fits the theme. None of this would be possible, of course, without HHS’ very own student council. STUCO has done an amazing job organizing this week and making it all workout.
Day 1:
The first day of spirit week this year was country vs country club! Country seemed to win though, as the halls were decked with badges and cowboy hats. Do not count out country club; there were still plenty of collared shirts and khakis.
Day 2:
Tuesday was especially popular because Tuesday was neon day. Every square foot of the school had neon construction vests and clothes. Junior John Leone was thrilled about Neon Day, saying, “Everywhere I looked there were reflective vests and bright colors. Everyone I know participated on neon day and the whole cafeteria was bright yellow.”
Day 3:
Wednesday was surfers vs bikers. The versus days are cool because students get to see several types of contrasting outfits. Every hallway and classroom had at least 3 leather vests. Despite all the bikers, surfers came out on top in terms of volume. Everywhere students looked, there were floral necklaces and Hawaiian shirts.
Day4:
Thursday was class colors day! Class colors day always has the most excitement surrounding it, as well as the most participation. It was great to see all the white, black, blue, and red. Thursday was also breathe out day so students were in high spirits. When asked about his time breathing out Jack Pollenz said, “I played kickball on the field, and I thought it was cool to see all of the different colors on both teams.”
Day 5:
Friday, the final day of spirit week, was red, white, and blue day -the perfect way to end the week. Students not only displayed pride for their school, but also for their country. Friday had some of the best participation, and the most creativity by far. Plenty of students had costumes. It was as if they were preparing for the red, white, and blue day to come.
Overall, spirit week is a wonderful event planned by our STUCO. This week is always a hit with the students, doing just as its name suggests and raising students’ spirits. Students laughed with each other about their costumes and creative outfits. The experience takes their mind off the work and keeps them in a positive headspace.
