Recently, there has been a lot of controversy surrounding the Hingham High School parking situation. As the school year began, much of the talk from the new senior class concerned the close lot parking raffle. This year, the school added around twenty, new close lot spots. This makes all the seniors’ chances at obtaining the ‘all so special’ close lot spot more achievable. After this year’s raffle, many seniors were disappointed by the results. Now, many are calling for a change in the system that picks the ‘close lot’ nominees. Senior Matty Croteau was lucky enough to win one of the spots and noted, “I was so relieved when I got the close lot spot, and am super surprised I was the only one of my friends to get it.”
Another parking problem that the school has run into has been regarding the spots in the far lot. As juniors continue to pass their driver’s tests throughout the year, many want to apply for these spots. However, as the year goes on the spots slowly start to fill up until there are none left. Many Hingham parents are outraged by this system because it favors children with earlier birthdates. Many parents are suggesting that they raffle them out at the beginning of the year with all students of the junior class, and then when students gain their licenses they can use the spot to commute to school. Mac Corey shared his thoughts by saying, “I have a later birthday and I am scared that when I finally get my license I won’t even be able to use it. I just think that the way the school does this is unfair and should be changed.” Mac, like many other students, is not happy with the way that this system works and thinks that a more fair system should be implemented.
The parking systems used at Hingham High School are mostly successful. However, most of the Hingham High School Students and parents are hoping for a fairer system to be implemented. Hopefully, we can see a change in the system by next year’s raffle.
