On Friday, October 18th, the Hingham field hockey team played Plymouth South for their senior night game. Before the game started, the junior girls on the team handed flowers to the seniors at Plymouth South. After recognizing the other team, the senior girls Lauren Howard, Becca Kardoos, Siena Brackett, and Haylen Wilson were given posters and flowers on the field by their teammates. They then walked onto the center of the field, with their parents and got their picture taken. After that, the game began.
To start off the game Haylen Wilson tipped in the first goal of the game, assisted by another senior Lauren Howard. In the first quarter senior Siena Brackett also scored reverse chipping it in. The last person to score in the first quarter was junior Emily Kiernan assisted by junior captain Ryan Hallisey. After a competitive quarter Hingham was winning 3-0. Even though Plymouth South had not yet scored, there was still lots of nerves and Hingham’s defense had seen the ball many times.
Haylen started off the second quarter strong by getting her second and final goal of the game, once again assisted by Lauren Howard. After the game senior Haylen said “It is so exciting to have scored in this game after being a part of this team for four years.” Siena and Haylen both scored twice in their senior night game and how excited they were was noticeable by their energy levels on the field. In the third quarter two goals were scored both made by Junior, Caitlin Patten. In the final quarter the game was at its most competitive point with neither of the teams scoring. Senior Becca Kardoos, and sophomore Molly McDonald did not let a single shot in the entire game.
Although this game came with an exciting win it was also an incredibly sad game. This meant the season was ending and it was the final year all the girls on the team would play together, with four of their players graduating. After the game had ended you could see the joy on the girls’ faces from their successful game, but also the sadness that comes with senior night. Siena mentioned “I cannot believe this is one of my final games with this team. I am so lucky to have had the opportunity to have played with all these girls.”
Last year this team made it to the final four games in the tournament. Hopefully, this season the team makes it even farther giving the seniors an even longer season, to spend more time with their amazing team!
