People are very opinionated about when the best time to decorate for the winter holidays is. In a survey of nine HHS students, five students, or fifty five percent of those who responded believe that the best time to decorate is anytime after Thanksgiving. The other options given were “Anytime After Halloween,” and “After/ On December 1st.”  

In this survey there was also space for students to provide comments.

Eme Bias, a sophomore, who chose “Anytime after Thanksgiving” explained, “Well to me it makes sense since the next holiday is Christmas and there is no other holiday to celebrate after Thanksgiving besides Christmas.” Valentina Neyra, a sophmore, who also selected this answer said, “After Halloween is too early and it would feel like we forgot about Thanksgiving”. Freshman Neve Brown who voted “Anytime after Halloween” offered the rationale behind her choice, “I think because there are not really any Thanksgiving decorations, you can put up holiday decorations because it’s not like you’re not acknowledging Thanksgiving.” Another freshman Audrey Lambert — who also responded the same way — acknowledged that “Thanksgiving should get more attention though because it is usually overlooked, it’s like the middle child.” Peyton Burke, a sophomore, chose “After/On December 1st,” and this is personally the option I would myself have picked. Peyton explains that, “It’s hard to get into the holiday spirit of Christmas when it feels solidly like fall.” 

Also, many people may be decorating earlier, but in small increments. Sophomore Veronica Webb believes that people should decorate whenever they want for the winter holidays, but not everything all at once. She described how her family starts with the little things, like candles in the windows as early as right after Thanksgiving, but they never put lights up or anything like that until December. She also explained that since her dad used to work as a firefighter, he does not let the family put their tree up very early because they can dry out and become a hazard, so this greatly affects when the rest of the decorations go up as it is easier to do it all at once. 

So whenever you choose to decorate this year take these opinions into consideration. Or just do what works best for you and will allow you to make the most out of the most wonderful time of the year!
