On Thursday, November 28th, Hingham commenced its annual Turkey Trot to celebrate the traditions of Thanksgiving! Each racer took their spot at the entrance to Hingham High School and started their five kilometer journey around Union Street, Wompatuck Park, and the High School’s track.
Before the race began, a wonderful rendition of the National Anthem was sung by Hingham High School students Ruby Blake, Annie Daly, Emma Lee, Izzie Donnely, and Breanna Weis. The runners launched into action shortly after, at just around 7:40 AM.
Coming in first, hot across the finish line, was 26 year old Mike Durkin, who had the fastest time overall at a strong 15 minutes and 17.4 seconds. He won the male open competition with Connor Reidy coming not too far behind at 15 minutes and 42 seconds. The final member of the overall top three was Sam Benham, aged 20 years old, with a time of 16 minutes and 18.9 seconds.
The overall female open winner was Kate Harrison who finished with an outstanding 17 minutes and 49.9 seconds. Female winner ages 1-4 was E. Sabitini, 5-9 was V. Ramella, female kids under 12 was S. Gladeau, female 14-17 winner was Clare Lowther, female 30-39 was Brittany Reed, 40-49 was Lauren Frazier, 50-59 was Katherine Forbes, 60-69 was Lisa Roche, and finally 70-99 was Katherine Soohoo. Sydney Steele who competed in the female competition 14-17 describes, “It was very uplifting and I really enjoyed how there were so many people cheering for me. I also loved eating the baked goods afterwards!” Congratulations to all of these successful runners!
Continuing with the top results, the male kids under 12 top finisher was L. Dunn, Male 1-4 was J. Ramella, Male’s 5-9 was S. Dellelo, Male 10-13 was Finnegan Murray, Male 14-17 was Aidan Sheehan Male 18-29 was Ryan Martin, Male 30-39 was Brian Malger, Male 40-49 was Tom Tuggan, Male 50-59 was Glen Dipalma, Male 60-69 was Cedric Vanzura and finally Male 70-99 was Tom Scott. Hingham High School junior Tommy Hartnett shares, “I had a great time running the turkey trot this year and will definitely do it again next year! Seeing familiar faces throughout the time was also great.”
Each and every member of the Hingham Turkey Trot earned great success, whether walking or running. The ongoing tradition will continue to be one of Hingham’s all time favorites and is a great way to be involved in a light-hearted competition or to get a breath of fresh air on Thanksgiving morning.
