The Student Council at the Hingham High School often holds different drives throughout the winter to help those in need for the holidays. Junior Emily Kiernan explains, “These drives are very impactful for those in need and it’s great that our school is able to offer students a way to help out!” These drives often include food drives or gift drives. This winter, one of the drives StuCo is holding is a drive for Boston Children’s Hospital’s Oncology Floors for Adelia. This drive began on November seventeenth and will go until December sixth at 2:30 pm.
This drive is being held in honor of Adelia who was diagnosed with Diffuse Midline Glioma in 2023 and unfortunately passed away in May 2024. Adelia is extremely loved by her community and when she was diagnosed Adelia Strong was created. Now, this foundation has raised over 450,000 dollars to aid in funding clinical trials for pediatric brain cancer patients. This foundation has held events in order to raise funds with one of the most prominent being the annual Falmouth Road Race. Other recent fundraisers include the Hingham Girls Volleyball Fundraiser, the Cancer Kids First stand that was at Hingham High School’s homecoming event, and Hingham Half Days that occur every half day. In addition, many of Adelia’s friends host lemonade stands, yard sales, craft sales, and more to help raise funds for the foundation. This foundation has made a serious impact and anyone can get involved by making a donation, joining their team, or hosting their own fundraising event.
This StuCo drive is being held to help patients in the Oncology Floors of Boston Children’s Hospital. The patients on the Oncology Floors of Boston’s Children’s Hospital are currently battling cancer. StuCo is hosting this drive to offer these patients items, toys, and necessities for the holidays. The items being accepted in this drive are slippers, fuzzy socks, robes, pillows, blankets, warmies (stuffed animals that heat up), toiletry kits, mints, gum, sensory stickers, fidgets, kids timers, weighted stuffed animals, normal stuffed animals, dry-erase board, expo markers, play-doh, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. All donations must be new and unused. Junior Ella O’Neill explains, “This drive will help to bring a smile to the faces of the children battling cancer with new toys and necessities”. Therefore, if you want to get involved and help raise the spirits of those battling cancer, donate any three of these items by putting them in the designated bin near the main office before 2:30 pm on December sixth.
