Winter sports are back in business for the new season. Programs ranging from boys and girls basketball to Hingham’s own gymnastics team are all back in their designated practice facilities and ready to lead the town into a hopeful 2025. Students are excited to make a statement this season and give the school things to look forward to even as midterms close in.
Basketball
While the boys didn’t start the season off the way they wanted to, they attended to give Marshfield a run for their money in the next game. The girls on the other hand are starting their season off against Marshfield. Both teams have old faces in their line ups as well as fresh faces that are ready to leave their mark on their programs. Every game of the season will inch each team closer to the playoffs, and with heads full of steam they hope to make some noise in the standings.
Dance team
This past fall season introduced the dance team to the 2024-2025 year. The team had many new freshmen join and with the amount of people on their team the football games were that much more entertaining and fun. Their competitions were also a highlight for them during fall. Now, it’s the winter season and most of the girls are still doing it but a few new ones have joined as well. Hingham’s dance team shows up for both of the town’s basketball teams and gives those they cheer on an extra boost of confidence. Due to scheduling the team isn’t cheering at a game until January, however their practices are in full swing. Jaiden Doherty, a sophomore, is in her second year of dance team. She mentioned “The team is very supportive and we are all really close. Last season, during the fall, was a great way to open the year, and I am anticipating a great winter season as well.” Doherty’s enthusiastic words will hopefully carry into the new year.
Hockey
Boys hockey hasn’t yet seen the ice in a real game, however they had a scrimmage earlier this December. They plan to get the edge over St John’s Prep on Saturday in their first game. SJP has been a long standing rival for the Harbormen and getting a home win against them will be an early Christmas present for the boys. The girls, unlike the boys, have had one game so far. They played on the 18th against Whitman Hanson in their home rink. The Harborwomen brought home a sweet win over their opponents and hope to come back out on top against Hanover HS. Both teams are looking very promising as they added new players to both rosters. The girls even added a whopping four freshmen to the team this year.
Gymnastics
Gymnastics is a hidden gem for the town of Hingham. Even some of the students at the high school were not aware that the town even had a gymnastics team. Maybe it’s a good thing for the girls to quietly work hard and then make a statement on whatever event they are competing in. The girls have been in the gym for a couple weeks already getting prepared for their first meet. Each athlete is putting in the work on each event so they can show out in their competition. Two new freshman faces appeared on the roster this season. Charlotte Passeggio and Grace Whiting were both added to the team at the beginning of the season. These girls seem very excited for the upcoming season as Whiting says, “Everyone, including the coaches are very supportive. While doing routines and practicing everyone pays attention and cheers loudly which makes it that much easier to feel confident in my gymnastics.” She also mentioned how excited she was for not just competitions but also team bonding and the connections she’ll make throughout the year. The team is working extremely hard and diligently in the short time that they’ve been back in action.
New Season, New Memories
So many other programs like the ski, swim, track, and wrestling teams have been spending their time practicing and bonding with their fellow teammates. Every team is looking promising in their own way and is ready to do whatever it takes to cement their names in Hingham’s history. The fall brought an assortment of exciting events including the field hockey’s final 4 appearance, crew’s championship win, and boy’s soccer championship appearance, and as the winter sports start to ramp up, hopefully new memories can be made.
