A year later, the energy at Hingham High School is once again buzzing as Christmas approaches. This year, students are just as enthusiastic about creating wish lists and dreaming of holiday gifts, but there are notable shifts in trends compared to last year. While TikTok remains a strong influence on what’s trending, there is a heightened focus on comfort and practicality in this year’s choices – especially when it comes to clothing.
Senior Kaylee Roberts says she, “want[s] an UGG robe” this Christmas. The desire for cozy and functional items is echoed by several students. Freshman Michael Fallon is hoping for “a new ski jacket” –a practical gift that is perfect for New England’s chilly winters and winter vacations North.
Fashion continues to dominate wish lists, with both Megan Howard and Annick Rankin mentioning their hoping for new clothes. This trend ties back to last year’s emphasis on expanding wardrobes, as seen in Grace Maroney’s and Lauren Howard’s wish lists.
However, this year, there seems to be a shift away from the highly specific accessory trends – like Airpods Max headphones or Stanley water tumblers – toward a broader focus on staples like clothing and shoes. Emphasizing this trend, Freshman Thomas McClellan says, “I want shoes, specifically Oliver Cabell’s,” demonstrating an appreciation for high-quality, stylish footwear.
Even faculty members are joining in on the wish list with excitement. Dr. Struzziero, a beloved teacher at Hingham High School, humorously admits he is hoping for something simple but essential: new fluffy towels. This blend of practicality and joy is a reminder of the diverse nature of holiday gifting.
The conversations around wish list-making have become a bonding activity for many students once again. Sharing ideas, comparing trends, and discussing unique gift options have made the holiday season feel even more about community. Students talk about where to find the best deals or share links to their favorite brands, creating a collaborative atmosphere that adds to the festive spirit. The shared excitement of wish list-making brings the Hingham High community closer, reminding everyone that the holidays are not just about receiving gifts but sharing the joy of time.
Comparing this year to last, the excitement around holiday fights remains unchanged, but the focus has subtly evolved. Last year, TikTok heavily influenced requests for niche items and trending products like lip balms and UGG Tasman slippers. This year, students are less caught in the zeitgeist and have started to shift toward products that will not only bring them joy but also serve a practical purpose in their daily lives.
