Out of sixteen teams who competed, the team Smash Bros, made up of seniors Patrick Browne and Owen Packard, won the 2025 annual Hingham High School Ping Pong Tournament on Thursday night on the 19th of December. Taking place in the High School cafeteria, these two were not met without a challenge. All teams played extremely well and all in attendance were filled with energy. Although ultimately these two came out on top, everyone in attendance was filled with energy and competitive spirits.
For the past four years, the student council hosted a ping pong tournament in order to fundraise for both the club and outside foundations. These outside foundations include Maddie’s Promise and The Anna Quinlivan Scholarship. Maddie’s Promise is a well known local foundation that pushes rare childhood research forward, helping to create life-saving treatments. The Anna Quinlivan Foundation provides scholarships for future theater enthusiasts, and promotes talents in art.
STUCO executive board, President Neely Sgobbo, Vice President Helen Concannon, Secretary Siena Brackett, Treasurer Anna Theophilos, Historian Charlotte Bernstein, Publicity Coordinator Oliva Dorn, and Junior Executive Ella O’Neill , all worked extremely hard in previous weeks to bring this wonderful event together. Not only did they physically set up the event, they also worked to publicize the event, and continued to work hard throughout the event to ensure everything ran smoothly. At the tournament president Neely Sgobbo said, “Ping pong has always been one of my favorite events to put on, since it gets so competitive every year. It’s nice seeing everyone having fun competing together right before break, it definitely raises the holiday spirit.”
The Holiday spirit has not always been associated with this event. As Student Council advisor Mrs.Viola says, “One thing I love about this is that randomly it turned into a costume event. The first year there was no costume aspect and this is a whole new aspect so even if you are not that into ping pong there is the costume aspect for you! It is also one of our most popular events and attracts students of all different interests. It is also so fun to do right before the break and a great way to celebrate the students’ hard work.”
Two freshmen in attendance Mia Milligan and Holly Haberlin both had nothing but positive remarks about the event. Holly commented, “it was so fun and a great way to relieve stress before the break,” and Mia added on by saying, “the tournament was a really fun way to begin break and really get me in the holiday spirit.”
As Mrs. Viola mentioned in her quote, this event is an opportunity to bring students of HHS together. Student Council is one of the largest clubs at Hingham High School, and works to better the lives of students. This club has members with all different interests, and hobbies but by hosting events such as the Ping Pong Tournament students are able to enjoy a fun and safe environment in school, and create positive relationships with other students.
