Last Year, the boy’s basketball scraped above .500 and made it into the playoffs. Right now they sit at 2-7.
Their 2-7 record is the result of many problems, but the biggest one was the graduation of their senior-loaded lineup of Chase Mello, Noah Manning, Jack Nicholas, Charlie Matthews, Killian Latanzi, Chris Teague, and Jack Larkin. Those seniors took up a large portion of the team and sometimes their starting five was only seniors.
Chase Mello, their star point guard last year, took a majority of the team’s shots and points along with his fellow seniors. Because of this, most players on the roster this year lacked varsity game experience and are therefore just getting used to this high level of basketball.
Even though they lack experience, the boys have had some impressive games against tough teams. A example of this is their game against Plymouth North. In their Plymouth North game, the boys had an impeccable offensive run to make the game close. Sadly, in the last 7 seconds, Plymouth North made a clutch three pointer to send the boys home with a final score of 52-49. Even though they may have lost, they showed a flash of greatness with their late-game comeback.
Their face-off against Nauset Regional was one of their best games of the season. They had a come-from-behind win as they scored four points in the last 30 seconds of the game. A big reason for their win is sophomore JT Reale. Reale had a astonishing game with 22 points; with two more years of development, there is no telling how good the kid can get.
In their game against Hanover, the boys had some early struggles, which continued, as the boys lost in a blowout fashion. Despite the bleak circumstances, Bradley Wheeler’s first career start was beyond anyone’s expectations as he shined beyond the arc. Despite the loss, player Alexander Rozanitis said, “The reason for our loss was because of the little things. If we work on those, then are whole gameplan will come together.”
While this season has been shaky so far, sophomore Cole Palek stays hopeful for him and his fellow teamates by quoting, “I think if we win out, we can succeed in the playoffs.”
