Throughout the past week, guidance counselors have organized a meeting for all juniors in order to get a head start on their futures. Junior year is very crucial to determine where you would like to go after high school has come to an end. These junior seminars provided helpful information for Hingham High students.
First Step of The College Process:
Although there are many different fields that are available to students, one major decision that students make is where they would like to go to college. The college process can be very complex and overwhelming, but with the right help, it can be easy. According to many guidance counselors at HHS, the first step students want to take is to organize a meeting with their assigned counselor. By meeting with a counselor, students will learn what to look for, and how to continue searching for colleges that seem appealing. Junior, Maddy Phillips mentioned, “Listening to what the guidance counselors were saying, I feel a lot less stressed. Organization within the college process is extremely important, and makes me feel ready for this journey to begin.”
College Touring:
Throughout the meeting, a common topic was the idea of college touring and showing interest to certain universities. In order to decide what a student actually wants in a school, it is necessary that they tour it and see the real aspects. Three aspects to consider while looking at colleges can be classes that are available, the student body, and the location. Although education is the most important part of college, it is necessary that a student enjoys other parts of the school in order to be comfortable. Seeing colleges in person also reveals to that college that a student is interested in that school, information they track; this too can make the college application process easier.
Making a List:
After seeing many different ranges of schools, students need to cut back on the number of schools to include only those that are the most appealing to them and where they can see themselves attending the most. When applying to colleges, it is crucial to apply to a different range of universities. Students were told to apply to 2-3 reach schools, 3-4 target schools, and 2-3 safety schools. Junior, Alec Whitmore, stated, “I never knew all the steps that needed to be taken in order to be organized and prepared for college. I am very grateful for the junior seminar that was provided!”
Other Options:
Yes, many students do go down the college road, but there are many other options to contemplate after HHS. All around the halls at Hingham High School, there are many job boards that are available for students to look at. They include fliers and posters that can be extremely helpful to students. Along with this, many students decide to go into the military. Guidance counselors also know how to help students with this, and will provide very helpful tips!
