The Swim and Dive Team is a sport at Hingham High School which often goes underappreciated by the broader HHS Community. Whereas it’s not too difficult to find an article about the football or soccer teams, the Swim and Dive Team has proven to be a hidden gem capturing Hingham High School’s athletic prowess over the years. This season is no different, with individual and team accomplishments making for a memorable season for all. Now into the latter half of the season, the Hingham High School Swim and Dive Team is looking to finish their successful season off on a high note.

In their regular season, the team made impressive strides in the water. Though the girls team was down a few members this year due to injuries, by the end of the season they placed third in the league at their Patriot League championship meet. Freshmen Sam Jesson and Amelia Byrne, Sophomore Dory Maguire, Junior Emma Izmirlic, and Senior Ally Vasilkos placed in the top six in individual events at the meet, contributing to the teams point tally. Excitingly, the girls 200 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay qualified for both sectionals and state championships, both relays earning crucial points that ultimately allowed the team to beat the previously dominant girls Duxbury team.

Additionally, the boys team, although one of the smallest teams in the league, placed 6th at the Patriot League championship meet. Juniors Bryan Ma, Kyle Donegan, and Ronan Flannery placed in the top six in their individual events. Despite being relatively small teams, both the girls and boys teams asserted their expansive capabilities at the patriot league meet and had fun along the way. Sophomore Teddy Lambert recalled, “I loved all of the meets this year where we got to be a team and support each other! I love being a fan of the 500 free because it’s really fun to cheer for and count, but my personal favorite is the 100 free.”
The next week will wrap up the 2025 HHS swim season with Sectional and State championships. This weekend Sam Jesson, Amelia Byrne, Emma Izmirlic, Dory Maguire, Callie Granoff, and Ally Vasilkos will travel to MIT for Sectionals Championships!
One of the most welcoming aspects of HHS Swim and Dive is its inclusivity. The team welcomes students of all ability levels and athletic backgrounds. Swimming, not only a beneficial sport in terms of building strength, endurance, and mobility, creates a close knit community of athletes that support and encourage each other in order to reach their full potential.
Whether for the team’s strong sense of community or the athletic benefits of participating, anyone can find a reason to join the HHS Swim and Dive team. Junior Lila Johnson noted, “My favorite part of the swim season was all of the friendships I made and all of the fun we have been having at practice. We have been working hard and it’s really been paying off in our post season training!” Similarly positively, senior captain Ally Vasilakos explained, “It’s a really great conditioning sport. If you do track, or crew, or another sport during a different part of the year, swimming can make you stronger and prepared.”
Although this season is drawing to a close, next year’s will be here before you know it. If you’re interested, consider joining the HHS Swim and Dive Team!
