Ned Wittmann is a freshman at Hingham High School. He is known by many as a classmate, teammate, and friend, but he is also a photographer. He takes astonishing photos for the students at Hingham High School and at other events around Hingham.
Ned started his photography “career” in May of 2023 at 12 years old. He says that he learned so much about photography from his family’s past expertise in this field. “My grandma was a photographer, so I mainly picked it up from her,” said Ned. Later in the interview, Ned also stated, “the one person who would probably be my mentor is my grandma.” He also credits some of his knowledge of photography to YouTube videos, which have helped him navigate the technology aspect of photography.
Ned explained that he enjoys photography because, “I’m not really good at art so taking pictures is a way for me to be creative.” Taking cool and unexpected photos is a way that he can turn his artistic skills into something he is passionate about. He admits that taking the same types of photos game after game becomes boring, so he tries to look for out of the box photos. When taking these non-traditional shots, Ned said that he searches for, “photos that will tell a story but also things that would show the emotion within the image.” This is particularly important in photography because it engages the viewer and their personal feelings about the image.
For Ned, the editing process is just as important as taking the shots. It takes anywhere from an hour up to over four hours to edit the numerous images taken at a single game. This is partly because he must sort through almost 2,000 photos. He uploads the photos to his computer and completes the editing before publishing roughly 125 photos.
One photo he particularly likes is of a Hingham High School’s football player reaching out to catch the football in midair. He loves this photo because “the ref was captured making a funny face in the background while the player was catching the ball.” However, his favorite sport to photograph is lacrosse because, “It’s fast paced and there really isn’t a lot of stop in plays.” Even though he takes photos at Hingham High School sporting events, he also does event photography and some street photography too.
Ned has turned photography from his hobby into his own small business. He hopes to freelance his photos later in life but also wishes to pursue a separate career alongside it.
News of Ned’s talent and his amazingly edited photos spread quickly throughout the Hingham High School community. Freshman Ellie Bellew remarks, “Our soccer team had heard really great things about Ned Wittmann and his pictures, so we wanted to see his talents for ourselves, and we did not regret hiring him.” Students from countless Hingham High sports teams have reached out to him for photos each week.
Ned is an accomplished and talented photographer who has a bright career ahead of him as the man behind the lens.
