After a short break, the Activists United Club is back at HHS and ready for a fresh start. If you are looking for a place to share opinions on a passionate world issue with your friends while munching on some breakfast, then look no further: the Activists United Club offers a secure space for students to engage in passionate conversation over a wide variety of topics during their meetings.
While some students may find it difficult to make a difference in select clubs when first starting out because of their leadership positions, the Activists United Club features a non-hierarchical method of organization with a democratic decision-making system. This organizational structure means students who first join have as much of a say as anyone else. The Activists United Club is currently working on focusing its interest on one or two specific topics, and because of the leadership system, students can work together to decide on a focus that they are passionate about. Currently, students have a unique opportunity to join a high school club and directly participate in discussions featuring the club’s possible future direction. Once the Activists United Club decides on a focus they will work to find ways to engage civically on the issue at hand and attempt to make a difference in their community.
Ms. Jope, the teacher who oversees the club, believes that students should look to join the club because, “It is important for students to have a space where they can safely express their views and find a way to engage civically.” Also having a place where they can, “Practice having dynamic discussions that are important to them” is important. With some active discussions, students will not only gain new perspectives onto differing situations but they will also gain skills in civic conversation. Gathering civic conversation skills is a key component in being able to successfully contribute to one’s community.
The Activists United Club is truly a one-of-a-kind opportunity at HHS and is open to all students. The club is normally held in room 180 before school, and information regarding future meeting times will be available on the Google Classroom, code:kxoqedb, if any student is interested.
