The Hingham High School’s Unity Club organized the school’s annual Unity Week for the upcoming Monday 3/3 to Friday 3/7. Building off the past years of the unity project, the week included five days of community-building and fundraising activities. Each of the days is dedicated to one or more charity organizations and the activities planned for those days also relate to the specific cause for which that day is assigned (see poster above). Taylor Saitow, treasurer of the Unity Club states she is “excited to kick off Hingham High’s unity week! [Her and the other club executives] have been hard at work with scheduling and organizing events throughout this week!”
According to the schedule, Monday is designated for Adelia Day, and students and staff are instructed to wear a rainbow. Tuesday is for Maddie’s Promise, the organization based in Hingham designated to childhood cancer research, and the day is themed purple. Wednesday is teal-themed to support the Anna Quinlivan Scholarship, a memorial scholarship for students in the technical aspects of theater such as lighting and sound. Thursday is Nephcure Day and HHS members should wear orange to support the research of rare kidney diseases. Finally, Friday celebrates Hingham Pride and Allyship with the community wearing red. While the goal is to have student display their support for these various organizations by wearing that day’s designated colors, colorful ribbons will also be sold in the lobby by Unity executives and members throughout the week to both raise the representation of these organizations and donate funds to their causes.
When asked about the work necessary to orchestrate Unity Week and its many corresponding events, President of the Unity Club, Kat Webber explained that “planning this week included a lot of discussion with other clubs and HHS staff, as well as help and volunteering from our own club members and officers who are all equally excited to organize a meaningful week students, will want to be involved in.”
As Kat mentioned, while the Unity Club organizes the main structure for the week, it is not the only HHS organization involved in scheduling the community-building activities. Members of People of Color and Allies, or POCA, are co-running the movie night that will take place on Friday 3/7. POCA members were also responsible for choosing the Movie, making sure it contained the thematic messages of unity and diversity which their organization and the Unity Club promote. Similarly, the Gay/Straight Alliance or GSA club has also been actively involved in Unity Week. On Thursday, they are planning a presentation on the importance of Allyship in preparation for Pride Day on Friday. Additionally, the High School’s Breath Out Club is organizing activities for Friday. As the club was founded to promote student mental health, the activities in past years have consisted of stress-relieving activities such as coloring, mind puzzles, going outside, and other relaxing tasks, however, the specific tasks for Unity Week 2025 have yet to be determined.
Overall, it is sure to be an exciting and important week for the students and staff alike. I urge all students and staff to participate in the themed days and show support for these necessary organizations by wearing the colors and taking advantage of the events throughout the week. As Kat Webber mentioned, the Unity Club, “can’t wait to share the core values of [the] club with the rest of the school!”
