Are you looking to get involved in your community or complete community service hours? Hingham offers endless opportunities and ways to involve yourself. National Honors Society requirements, the new graduation requirements, and even just participating for fun are great reasons to engage in community service hours!
Recently, Hingham High School applied for a new graduation requirement of 40 hours, 10 hours per year. This implementation applies to current first-year students and grades below. Ultimately, completing the 40 hours may seem daunting at first, but helping can be easy and fun! Also, students considered for the National Honors Society at the high school level need at least 15 hours and 6 hours to remain in the program. Freshman Casey Gately, looking to complete service hours, explains for her graduation requirement, says, “Completing service hours can come in all forms! Sometimes you complete them without knowing. For example, I have helped at Linden Ponds in the past and completed a few hours already!”
The Hingham Food Pantry is a great local option to volunteer at. It is at 685 Main Street on the bottom floor of the Second Parish Church. Students of any age complete a sign-in and sign out method to keep track of hours spent at the pantry. Each person helps make food orders and deliver food to cars. Junior Brooke Pryor who has participated at the food pantry in previous years describes, “I loved helping at the food pantry. Learning how to volunteer was straightforward and it is also fun to do with a friend or even a group!”
The Hingham Public Library offers many opportunities to volunteer with their standard and teen volunteer programs. Located at 66 Leavitt Street, volunteering includes delivering books to homes, working in the bookstore, shelving books, and special projects. To get involved, call 781-741-1405 or visit the volunteer website for information and sign up.
Finally, various organizations around Hingham are worth contacting for potential opportunities such as the Hingham Historical Society, the Hingham Community Center, nursing homes, and more. Remember to spread your hours apart as it may feel overwhelming to complete them over a brief time.
