For the majority of students at Hingham High School who take artistic courses, photography always seems to top the ranks. Settled nicely in room 151, photography with Mr. Eschauzier-better known as Mr. E-Show-is an imaginative sanctuary where all are welcome. The class allows the students of HHS to see things in ways one never could have imagined. Almost everyone who steps into the class walks out with a new perspective and an eye trained to find beauty and interest in everyday occurrences.
With both a fall and spring season of photography, the landscape photos range throughout the years, and with new students each semester, so do the new ideas and artful minds. Not only is photography the perfect expressive outlet, but it is also a well-needed recharging period for many hardworking high schoolers.
Student Graham Baker mentions, “Photography is a wonderful class and a nice break in the day where I can explore my creativity, learn new strategies, and further my skills in the arts.” Graham is one of the many passionate students who go above and beyond in the course. It is amazing how much work and time a class that most people think of as simply clicking a button actually requires. Before beginning to compose photos, at the start of the course Mr. E-Show presents a quick run-down of how the camera works and the aspects of photography. Students will learn proper exposure, depth of field, texture, directional forces, shape, close-up basics, and studio portraits. These basic skills will aid the artists and enhance their work throughout their photography careers. After completing the fundamentals, students will proceed to use their weeks in class brainstorming and shooting for “photo of the week.”
Photo of the week is a weekly photography critique with a theme. Each Friday, students will gather around the View Board and Mr. E-Show will pull up each photo submission one at a time, and together, the class goes over what they like, what needs improvement, and then they vote. This week, the theme was “Presto,” and in class, one will see snazzy suits, magic wands, and stuffed rabbits. It seems as though everyone was on the same wavelength with this theme. Currently, the person with the most photo of the week wins is former HHS student Max Papeleoni.
Photography student Joe Bennion comments on the class and its wonderful teacher saying, “Photography inspires me everyday and everyone at Hingham High School should enroll at least one year. Also, Mr. E-Show is my favorite teacher; he’s the G.O.A.T.” From substitute teachers, to the students of Mr. E-Show’s other art classes, everyone can agree that he has influenced their creative ways and their artistic minds. If you’re a student at Hingham High School with a love for detail, art, and technology, the current students of Mr. E-Show’s photography class will be ecstatic to recommend this creative course.
