April Break is finally upon us, and Hingham High School students are excited for the release after a relatively gloomy weather stretch between late winter and early spring where everything just seems sort of… gray. But of course beyond that, the entire community at HHS has been busy with everything from MCAS testing to Junior Prom, as well as SATs, college decisions, and the beginning of the spring athletic season.
While everyone seems to be busy, it’s the busiest times of the school year where HHS is the most alive and well as a community, as everybody is working hard and pursuing their interests both in and out of the classroom. But as great as all of that is, everyone can appreciate a relative break from a routine, whether it be a family trip to a faraway place, or a staycation with only a handful of practices to worry about, it feels good to shake things up and get some sleep for a change.
HHS senior Zach Kenigsberg is ready for a well-needed break from work and bad weather. Zach states “I’m just excited for April break. Lately school has felt like a never ending treadmill. Maybe it’s the bad weather, but everyone is just mentally drained.” Fortunately Zach says he’s getting a well needed change of scenery this break, stating “I’m going to see my grandparents in Salt Lake on my way to an open house event for my college in LA. I’m thrilled because it’s felt like the work has been dragging me down for a little while, but now soon I’ll get to see face to face the more exciting future that I’ve been working towards.”
On the other hand, HHS senior Joe Andrews looks forward to a break from work at home, where he can focus on seeing friends, studying for exams, and getting some well-earned rest in between. Joe says “April break couldn’t come at a better time. I’m not traveling anywhere, so the days off give me time to relax and spend time with my family, but also prepare for my AP tests, which start up in May. It’s surreal that this is my last April break in high school, so I hope to spend time with friends as well.”
Whether leaving town for the far corners of the world or staying close to home, HHS students, like our senior class with their college decisions, are going to have fun in the future wherever they may be. To recall an old proverb, ‘wherever you go, there you are.’ So, hopefully what we can all keep in mind as we embrace our April vacation is that it is not where we go, but who we are that determines the greatness of our future.
