Unlike a typical sports event with bleachers and an exciting match between teams, a crew regatta includes a series of high stakes races seen from a viewpoint on shore. The races are each short sprints requiring skill and focus. The team has been training each day in order to put their all into each short sprint. Despite less water time due to poor conditions the team has been putting in countless hours of practice. This year the Hingham Crew Team’s only home regatta will be taking place near the Bathing Beach on Hingham Harbor on April 27th.
Sophomore on the team Eva O’Sullivan says, “Regattas are very long and require a lot of work from the rowers as we have to rig and de-rig boats, take oars down and bring them up, put riggers away, and put boats away. Though I do think that because the regattas last so long it is a nice opportunity to spend time with friends, relax, and enjoy the weather when it is nice.” Regattas can be a great chance to socialize in a scenic area while cheering on your team. Salty Bow’s location allows easy access to such an exciting event.
A large crowd of supporters would be the perfect motivation for each boat of eight rowers and their coxswain. They will be flying by in 1300-meter sprints right through the harbor. Many parent volunteers and organizers show their support by setting up the viewing area and supplying food for the spectators and rowers. In past years Salty Bow has taken place in Bare Cove, another beautiful location. The advantage of Hingham Harbor is its accessibility to anyone looking for a chance to cheer for Hingham.
Another sophomore, Lexi Messina commented that, “Salty Bow is a great opportunity for people to show Hingham pride. It is super fun to watch, and it is awesome to see the amount of people that come and support our team!” It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to put together an event with over 100 athletes, but this regatta is more than just a few races, it is a representation of Hingham’s unity and pride. If you are available to witness the intense races, accompanied by the beautiful Hingham harbor, and fellow fans please stop by on April 27th.
