In major league baseball today, the ability to keep up with the ever-evolving skill of incoming players is an important factor in remaining competitive among peers. Through the first twenty or so games of the 2025 MLB season, three players have proven their projected talents, and in some areas exceeded expectations. These three future stars include Paul Skenes, Kristian Campbell, and Jackson Jobe. These players, among others, will ultimately become the three faces of the game through their talent.
Paul Skenes, a starting pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, is in his second season in the majors; coming off an amazing rookie year, he wrapped up with the 2024 rookie of the year award. Out of Louisiana State University, (LSU), Skenes posted an impressive 11-3 win-loss record in his 23 starts. Through all of his outings, he managed to achieve a 1.96 ERA, (Earned Run Average), putting himself among the top tier of starting pitchers. So far in 2025, he seems to be continuing the success of his rookie season, throwing 26 innings and a 2.89 ERA; he managed to lead the Pirates to two wins and one loss. Hingham High School student Beckett Williams commented on the star pitcher, “He is a great player with a CY Young award inbound.”
Kristian Campbell, a second baseman for the Boston Red Sox, made the opening day roster this year as a rookie, and he has been showcasing his stellar talent and making his presence known around the league. Campbell started off the season hot, putting up a .288 batting average as well as three home runs. Campbell’s early success achieved him a long-term offer from the Sox of eight years and sixty million dollars. Michael Cignetti, a Hingham High School freshmen, commented, “Young prospect Campbell is an exciting talent for the Boston Red Sox and has been a key contributor on offense and defense.”
Jackson Jobe, although he battled injuries in his first couple years after being drafted, should also be included on this list, as this is his first season at full health after being selected third overall by the Detroit Tigers in 2021. Jobe, a starting pitcher, only was able to pitch 2 games before this season, as a result of his injuries. However, through his first four starts of this season, he has been able to post a 2.70 ERA and lead the Tigers to two wins. He is sure to be a future star in Major League Baseball.
