The Hingham Girls Tennis team has started the season strong, with only one loss so far. On Wednesday, April 30th, they faced off against a tough Duxbury team, determined to keep their winning momentum going. Despite the challenge of intense heat and a formidable opponent, Hingham came out on top with a decisive 4-1 victory, thanks to their strong team dynamic and talented roster.
Starting off strong, senior Sanya Khadivi delivered an impressive performance against Duxbury’s second singles player, Jordan Fiorentino. Khadivi dominated the match with a 6-1, 6-1 score. When asked about her overall performance, Sanya explained, “Thankfully the weather was great, so I wasn’t too worried walking into the match. Warming up there were some nerves since my opponent seemed really solid, but I managed to stay true to my game. As the match progressed, I grew more confident in myself and my shots, and I was able to stay steady. Overall, I think it was one of my best games of the season yet.”
Junior Hannah Mello followed with another win for Hingham on the third singles court, defeating her opponent 6-4, 6-2. As she came back from her win, she noted, “Overall, it was a really fun and competitive match. My opponent played well and kept me on my toes with some tricky shots, which made the game all the more exciting.”
Despite a strong effort, junior Sam Ruddick, playing first singles, fell in a hard-fought match against Duxbury freshman Sophia Smith. The intense battle showcased high-level play from both athletes and was one of the most exciting matches of the day.
On the doubles side, both teams came out victorious. Juniors Sammy Price and Gabi Magner secured a 6-4, 6-1 win, while seniors Maddie Cusack and Mia Sacco clinched a 6-2, 7-5 victory. Both were challenging matches, but the Hingham players demonstrated resilience and teamwork to prevail. Cusack reflected, “I love playing Duxbury because it’s always a competitive match. I felt really good throughout the match because the weather was really good. Sideline etiquette was a little questionable in the beginning, but it can also be motivating. Overall, it was fun and I am excited for them to come to us.”
In addition to the official matches, three exhibition doubles matches were played. Veronica Ruth and Cassie McCabe played in third doubles, Caitlin Patten and Ani Alessi in fourth doubles, and Tessa Grossman and Katie Kracunas in fifth doubles. While these matches did not count towards the final score, they highlighted the depth of Hingham’s talent and gave more players valuable court time.
