On the first Saturday of May, the third, the Hingham Downtown Association hosted Downtown in Bloom, an event celebrating the arrival of spring and the upcoming Mother’s Day holiday. The event featured an exciting rubber duck scavenger hunt for kids, local art displays, DIY flower arrangement, and so much more thanks to the participation of downtown businesses and local nonprofits, including the More Than Words project.

Adding to the cheery atmosphere, the Hingham High School Band was invited to perform during the event. Musicians from both Concert Band and Wind Ensemble, as well as band director Mr. Cincotta, arrived early and kicked off the sunny day with a Bruno Mars medley, performing hits like Uptown Funk, Just the Way You Are, When I Was Your Man, and Locked Out of Heaven. This upbeat piece was the same one they recently performed at this spring’s All-Town Band Concert.
Amy Brown, Executive Director of Hingham Downtown described, “Having the Hingham High School band launch our Downtown in Bloom event last weekend with such style and spirit made all the difference! We feel so grateful that HHS band supports our downtown not only for this event, but Arts Walk, Hingham for the Holidays and much more. Their civic participation invokes so much energy and community spirit every time– we are so honored!”
Reflecting on the experience, Sophie Smith, a sophmore, offered, “Being able to do what you love is amazing, but being able to share it with others makes it even better.” Another sophomore band member, Casey Salerno added, “We put so many hours of hard work in, in and out of the classroom, and while it’s nice to showcase this at our concerts, the people who usually attend are just our parents. So it’s really fun to share our music with the rest of the community!”
It is safe to say that Downtown in Bloom will not be the last time you see the HHS band at a local event! Want to hear more from the HHS band? Don’t miss their upcoming Spring Concert on May 13 at 7p.m!
