There are less than five days left of school for seniors at Hingham High School. That includes the four seniors on the Hingham High Sailing Team (Chris Hoppe, Caroline O’Hara, Colin Cleary, and Parker Bradl) whose senior night recently recognized both the fact that their remaining time is limited, but that the future of those who are younger on the team is profoundly bright. So what’s a better time than the present to take stock of where the Sailing Team is today, in the wake of great success, but also on the verge of even more.
Every weekend, the Hingham Sailing Team engages in difficult fleet racing regattas and team racing tournaments against some of the most competitive teams of their kind in New England, in addition to their regular team racing meets over the course of the week. This past weekend Hingham was able to host such an event for once, during which the team put up a strong showing covered by the Hingham Anchor. Audrey Smith, a Junior at HHS, and a captain of the Sailing Team, stated “Last weekend was great hosting the Herreshoff qualifier, we got to race against some of the best women in the state and it really showed how strong our girls continue to be. Now moving on to the new england girls championship I have a lot of confidence in our abilities on the water. A big thanks to all of the volunteers that helped make it happen including some alumni that helped on the course and our awesome network of parent volunteers.”
However, in addition to the success they have had on the water in the past week, HHS’s Sailing Team is, as always, looking to the future. Chris Hoppe, a senior at HHS, and captain of the Sailing Team, said “I am really looking forward to this upcoming week; on Saturday we have our A-Division team race tournament against some of the best teams in the state, and then the girls drive straight to Maine for the Herreshoff finals. On Monday and Tuesday, we have the MBL champs at Community Boating, and then on Wednesday we cap off our season with the state championship at MIT. I am looking forward to closing out this great season and racing my last few regattas as a senior.”
As the days of seniors steadily decrease, so does the time left in the HHS Spring Athletics Season, but even as the number of days left is starting to wind down, the intensity of the Sailing Team’s schedule has not, and the team has continued to stay vigilant in continuing to excel against challenging teams from across the state. So, whether sailors are freshmen rising in the ranks, or seniors savoring their last races, everyone on the HHS Sailing Team shares the desire to work together to win.
