On Friday May 30, 2025, Hingham High School’s varsity girls tennis team played their first playoff match against Stoughton. Throughout the regular season, the girls team had a stellar record of 17-1. Their only loss was a close fall to private school Bishop Feehan. This record set up the girls tennis team to become the Patriot League champs. Additionally, by a vote from the league coaches, Hingham High School’s girls tennis team was awarded the Patriot League Team Sportsmanship Award. In the end, the team was ranked fourth going into the D2 tournament.
For their first match, Hingham’s lineup consisted of junior captain Sam Ruddick in 1st singles, senior captain Sanya Khadivi in 2nd singles, and junior Hannah Mello in 3rd singles. As for doubles, junior captain Sammy Price and junior Gabi Magner played in 1st doubles and seniors Sienna Besser and Cassie McCabe played 2nd doubles. Going into the match with no prior experience of playing Stoughton, the team was ready for anything. Fortunately, in the end the team won on all 5 courts and will be moving on to the round of Sweet 16.
Following the match, Sam Ruddick explained, “I was not really sure what to expect going into the match because we had not yet played Stoughton. However, I think we all stayed really focused and I am super excited that we were able to win and make it to the next round!” Additionally, Cassie McCabe added, “I think me and Sienna really worked well together today. I am also so proud of everyone and am really excited to be moving on in the tournament for my senior year! ”
Every match, the captains award a “player of the match” to a team member who played especially well that day. The first player of the match during the playoff season was awarded to junior Hannah Mello! Hannah was the first to finish her match and beat her opponent 6-1 in the first set and 6-2 in the second set. In conclusion, with an amazing regular season and great first playoff match, the HHS Girls Tennis Team is looking to make it far in the tournament!
