As the school year winds down and the weather gets warmer, it’s the perfect time to take advantage of everything Hingham and the South Shore have to offer. From hiking beautiful parks and beaches to getting ice cream at the beach, there are so many fun activities to do in the summer. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or just a chance to get outside, here are some of the best ways to enjoy the outdoors.
One of Hingham’s most scenic spots is located on World’s End, a park located on a peninsula that extends into Hingham Harbor. It’s a beautiful spot that has views of Boston and long paths, making it an ideal place to walk. Junior Courtney Hay shared, “I love going to Worlds End during the summer for a walk because it’s so nice to be outside, and it’s just so stunning. At high tide, you can jump off the cliffs while looking across the whole harbor.”
Another local place is Bare Cove Park, which has a trail system that runs along a river. Full of historical markers, paved paths, and benches, it is a great place to run or walk your dog during the summer.
When the sun is out and the temperatures get hot, there is no better place to be than the beach. For somewhere local, Hingham Harbor offers a smaller beach, but a great place for relaxing. A snack shack is also located on the beach, where you can stop for a quick bite to eat, and even walk just a little bit further to make it to downtown Hingham. If you’re up for a short drive, Nantasket Beach in Hull is another favorite. With a wide shoreline and a nostalgic boardwalk nearby, it is the perfect place to cool off and stop and get dinner after.
No summer is complete without ice cream and luckily, Hingham has plenty of great options. Nona’s in downtown Hingham is a favorite spot among townspeople, where the homemade ice cream is unmatched. If you’re looking for soft serve, JJ’s Dairy Hut is the perfect place. Finally, Hornstra Farms offers more homemade treats and ice cream that come straight from the farm, and you even get an opportunity to stop in to see the cows and calves up close.
If you’re looking for something to do at night, the Hingham Shipyard offers an outdoor movie night held weekly during the summer months that will give you the perfect change to spend some quality time under the stars. And, if you’re looking for more of an adventure, taking the ferry from Hingham to Boston is a great way to do so. The ferry offers stunning views of the city, and once you’re in Boston, walking the waterfront or grabbing a bite to eat is such a fun thing to do. Abbey George, sophomore at HHS, says, “I love taking the ferry into Boston during the summer because I think it’s such a fun and easy way to get there since I don’t have my license yet. Boston also has so many summer activities like shopping on Newbury street and getting ice cream, two things I love doing with my friends!”
