Now that June has begun, students are running for student government. With candidates trying to secure votes, the ways that they go around gaining popularity among the voters can range from posters to handing out candy in the hallways. But what exactly are the leadership positions that these students are running for?
The first two positions are the President and Vice president. Unlike in the presidential elections of the United States, the students running for President do not get to choose their VPs, instead the Vice President is chosen by the students through a separate vote. The President and Vice president work together to manage their grade and everything that needs to be done.
Along with them, there is the Treasurer. The treasurer manages funds for their grade and communicates with the main office. Along with managing the budget, the treasurer is in charge of fundraising and managing their grade’s account. The funds in this account go to events like prom and student organized events.
The Secretary keeps notes and plans agendas, along with keeping everything organized. The secretary also acts as a communicator.
Finally, there is the Student Advisory Committee (SAC) representative, the newest of the five positions. This position involves representing the students of the representative’s grade at meetings. Next year, the SAC representatives will be working with the school council, too.
Along with these positions, the Student Council has positions as well including President, Junior Executive, Treasurer, Secretary, Publicity Coordinator, and Historian who oversee the student body. The President serves as a leader while the Junior Executive acts as a trainee under the President. The Publicity Coordinator manages things like the Student Council’s Instagram account and hanging up flyers, while the Historian keeps track of all the things that the Student Council does over the course of the year and organizes them into a portfolio.
Ms. Viola, the student council advisor at Hingham High School, shared, “I think it’s a really awesome experience, even if you aren’t in an executive position or in one of those class officer roles; it’s really important to be involved with your grade, and with your broader school community. You get amazing experience.”
Lexie Grimm, a freshman running for Secretary, explained, “I really enjoy being involved with school and extracurriculars like StuCo, so being Secretary seemed like a great way to get more involved and get other people involved through creating different class activities and events.”
Additionally, Aria Giardino, the class of 2028 Treasurer this year and next, spoke about her role as Treasurer and what they have accomplished this year, stating, “We’ve raised almost $7,000 for our class which is almost half of what we need for Junior Prom. We’re also looking to make a pickleball tournament for next fall, so people should sign up for that when we put it out.”
