After going 6-5 last season, the Hingham Harbormen are back and ready to make a statement with one of the best rosters this program has seen in a while.
Last year, the Harbormen had a great first half of the season, as they won 4 of their first 5 games last year, with that one loss being an away game in Hanover, 35-18.
Following their impeccable five-game run, they played one of the strongest teams on the south shore, the Marshfield Rams. The Rams’ dominance has been present for the past decade as they have won multiple state championships. Unfortunately for the Harbormen, they got stumped by the Rams and lost 47-14.
The loss set the tone for how the second half of the season played out, as they only won two out of their next five games. The Harbormen’s letdown of a season was greatly sparked by injuries, tough opponents, and a lack of depth across the board.
This year, the tables have seemed to turn for the Harbormen, as their depth, starting roster, coaching schemes, and conditioning have taken a big leap forward.
This all sprouts from offseason collaboration, like team lifts three times a week, and leadership coming from senior captains. Additionally, players coming back from injury, Andrew Sullivan and Frank Csrnko, can play a key role in the success of a talent-loaded roster this year. Because of all of these improvements, Harbormen Justin Kosierowski was positive and hopeful when responding to doubts about the Harbormen’s potential success for their upcoming season. Justin responded to the backlash by saying, “I think we will have a good shot at a title run this year! Although we didn’t have the best year last year, I think we have improved so much that it will be hard to stop us.”
The Harbormen will take on the Hanover Hawks for their first matchup of the season, and it looks like it will be a nail-biter. Last year, the Harbormen disappointingly lost to the Hawks. Now, they can be hopeful not to repeat their loss, due to an aspiring new roster and game plan that works to counter the Hawks’ attacks.
Looking at the Harbormen’s season ahead, it seems to be a tough and unforgiving one as they play three state championship contenders for their respective divisions. Along with that, they will play an Abington team the week after Hanover, against which they went into triple overtime against a good Duxbury team.
Although there might be hard times, linebacker and a senior captain of the team, Charlie Shape, said that, “I think are leadership and unity will be enough to play well against the best teams in are schedule.”
