Among the fabulous clubs and organizations at Hingham High School, the Global Citizenship Program has remained one of the most popular over the past several years. The Global Citizenship Program aims to broaden the global horizons of all students by organizing events and meetings that enhance their knowledge and understanding of current events, cultural holidays, and promote their development into exceptional global citizens.
The organization has two branches: the club and the certificate program. The Global Citizenship Club is open to all students with an interest in global studies. In the club, all members are encouraged to attend all meetings and events that are held; however, nothing is mandatory. The club is part of, yet different from, the certificate program; both hold the same values, ideas, and core beliefs. However, the certificate program requires more dedication, participation, and effort. Unlike the club, to become a certificate member, students must go through a thorough application process as well as attend all mass meetings, along with one monthly event that is held by each member of the GCP Executive Board. Although the program requires more participation, it is absolutely worth it because not only does it look great on a college application to be a part of GCP, but it is also a tremendous honor and opportunity to learn about what students can experience outside of Hingham.
Whether you are a certificate member or simply a club member, the amazing events are open to all! Each and every event that GCP holds is meticulously planned in order to reflect the program’s ideas about experiencing other cultures, traditions, and expanding its knowledge about the world. Along with one monthly Mass Meeting, each member of the executive board (president, vice president, treasurer, etc.) plans and hosts one event per month. Beginning the 2025-2026 school year strong, this month’s events vary from exploring Oktoberfest, diving into global music artists, and discovering the roots of current political issues, such as the ones that Nepal is currently experiencing.
The Global Citizenship Organization of Hingham High School was founded and is still run by Ms. Kara Roth, an English teacher at HHS and a global study enthusiast! When asked about the program, Ms. Roth stated, “The Global Citizenship Program offers a club experience to all HHS students, and it offers a certificate pathway for students interested in further, more intensive commitment to global studies. In the club, students can attend monthly meetings, hear guest speakers, participate in cultural and educational events, from cooking to international politics to holidays, and more. Students interested in the certificate pathway can apply in the spring of their freshman or sophomore year. The program’s core values include promoting understanding, fostering curiosity, and encouraging exploration. We hope GCP gives HHS students an avenue to explore the world beyond their own experience and to make connections between their own experiences and the world beyond Hingham. So many exciting things happen in GCP that lead students down exciting paths. Whether it’s a personal passion they pursue for their certificate portfolio project, a connection made with an international pen pal, an inspiring travel abroad experience, or connecting with a visiting exchange student–GCP provides opportunities for students to be engaged with the world beyond our borders!” Adams, the media chair on the GCP Executive Board and senior at HHS, describes her experience, “So far, I have had a lot of fun making events and brainstorming with the other people on the executive board. It has also been really fun decorating our display in the HHS hallway! I would highly recommend that any students at Hingham High join.” Not only do the advisors and executive board enjoy the organization, but the student participants love it as well. Current junior Tatum Lane states, “This past week we had our first meeting of the year! I love GCP because it gives every student a variety of events.”
The Global Citizenship Program gives all students the opportunity to broaden their global horizons and perspective on other cultures and current events.
