On Wednesday, September 25, 2025, many students from Hingham High School took an “in-school field trip” to watch a new, award-winning documentary, “Inundation District”, and learn more about the future of Boston’s Seaport.
The director of the film, David Abel, created the story in 2024, aiming to educate the public about global warming, climate change, and the human impact on the environment. To quickly summarize the film, “Inundation District” incorporates the perspectives and opinions of proper Bostonians on how the Seaport area is slowly being submerged. Many people’s homes will be severely damaged or destroyed, and the billions of dollars invested in the construction of the newly built area will be wasted in the future. When the area was being built, the investors named the location the “Innovative District”, but some have started to call it the “Inundation District,” hence the name of the documentary. Students were overjoyed to learn more about these issues because it has a significant impact on their lives. Climate change does not seem like a massive problem until it impacts people head-on, and when they see its implications for the first time.
One of the viewers, Senior Ella O’Neil, mentioned, “I had no idea this was happening, even though Boston is not even thirty minutes away from us. The film was extremely educational and very important for people all over the world to be aware of.” Most viewers went into the field trip without knowing what to expect. Walking out, most had a very similar reaction to Ella.
After the documentary came to a close, one of the directors came to talk to the Hingham viewers and answer any questions that they had regarding the story. He mentioned that many investments and decisions would need to be made to stop and slow down the process of the Seaport from going underwater. “We are going to make investments that fail,” the director mentioned. Even if they know “not all of them are going to work,” it is a necessity to put in as much effort as possible to prevent this destruction.
Similar to this statement, Junior Kaylie Fabrizio mentioned, “I did not know how much effort was being put into this problem. Although it benefits the city, it is not nearly enough to stop the water from rising. More citizens around the area need to step up and save Boston”.
This assertive, yet inquisitive, trip allowed students to learn more about their community. People all over the world should watch the new, award-winning documentary, as it may have a storyline similar to what is happening in other parts of the world.
