As the MLB regular season approaches an end and October baseball is on the horizon, the playoff race has become very chaotic. For the first time in 4 years, Boston has played meaningful baseball down the stretch and as of September 26, 2025, the Red Sox have clinched a playoff berth after a thrilling walkoff win against the Detroit Tigers 4-3.
Despite some late season injuries and slumps, players have stepped up for the Red Sox to carry them through September and keep them in the playoff picture. When Roman Anthony sustained a season ending oblique injury, the offense was desperate for answers. Additional injuries to Wilyer Abreu and massive slumps from Alex Bregman and Ceddanne Rafaela left the offense struggling in a paramount time of the season. Thankfully, players like Romy Gonzalez- who had a 13 game hit streak- and Rob Refsnyder- who delivered multiple clutch hits for the Red Sox in the past month- helped keep the team afloat. Additional pitching standout performances from rookies Connelly Early, and Kyle Harrison propped up the lineup along with the other starters and helped the team maintain the second wild card slot.
“I really enjoyed the balance and performances of both very young and veteran players this year,” commented math teacher Mr. Burke, an avid Red Sox fan. “This year feels much different than the past few seasons.” He is not wrong, as the Red Sox have stepped up their game across the lineup. Big offseason signings of Garrett Crochet and Aroldis Chapman have transformed the pitching staff into a force to be reckoned with come October. “I think the Red Sox could surprise a lot of people in the playoffs,” Jack Griffiths said. “They have one of those teams that you just can’t ever count out of a baseball game.”
The current outlook for the postseason is cloudy at the moment, so it is difficult to look forward and pinpoint the first opponent for the Red Sox to begin the 2025 playoffs. Multiple teams currently are vying for the final wild card position but one thing is for sure, regardless of who they play, the Red Sox have the roster and the spirit to put up a formidable fight.
“I’m not the biggest Red Sox fan but I’ve paid more attention than I usually do this season,” added Ronan O’Brien. “I’ll definitely watch some of the postseason action.” Hopefully this playoff berth does not end in the first round, but is a precursor to a deep and successful playoff run.
