On Friday, September 12, the Dock, a fitness and wellness center at Hingham High School had its ribbon cutting, unveiling the new building to the community. When the project broke ground in December of 2024, nobody expected it would take almost a year for completion.
Back in 2021 when the project was approved, the Hingham Sports Partnership (HSP) started a 1.5 million dollar fundraiser in order to campaign for the building. The non-profit worked alongside multiple businesses and programs such as New Balance Athletics, Coastal Dealerships, South Shore Bank, and Special Needs Athletic Partnership (SNAP) in addition to Senator Patrick O’Connor to raise huge sums of money. Furthermore, generous family donations from all over the South Shore helped fund for the rest. The project took over two years to fund, but most would agree it was worth it in the end.
As the Dock opened this past Friday, it displayed fitness equipment from Gronk Fitness Products, owned by Rob Gronkowski. All the weights are brand new and personalized with the Hingham logo. The huge space also has large garage doors, something that sophomore Justin Kosierowski, a member of the varsity football team, says he looks forward to. When asked, he said, “I am really looking forward to using it, since it is so much bigger than the previously used weight room. It also is much more open and will allow for more fresh air. I am also super excited about the nicer equipment.”
Kylie McAloon, a junior at Hingham High says, “I am so excited that the Dock is finally opening because it will give our sports team more areas to lift, workout, and bond with one another. Additionally, it will be nice for teams to be able to spread out and work in different areas besides our current gym. It will also allow more sports teams to be able to participate in weightlifting which is awesome.”
Though the Dock has yet to be fully set up inside, many students are ready to occupy the space. 80% of HHS’s student population participates in a sport, making The Dock an ideal place for all athletes.
