Leading up to homecoming weekend is an exciting time for all. Spirit Week builds healthy competition between grades, while also uniting Hingham as one. Students and faculty develop a sense of excitement for the coming days as each day has a special dress-up theme. Some students look forward to this week more than others due to their devotion to being student athletes. Homecoming has four sports games: field hockey, boys soccer, girls soccer, and finally, football.
The varsity football team, facing Duxbury, has an excitingly optimistic opportunity ahead of them. Varsity offensive lineman, Micheal Fallon, agrees, saying, “I think that we have a stronger team now than we have ever had before.” The Hingham football team has made many advancements over the off season and holds a mighty 3-1 record so far this year. Hingham has already demonstrated its major improvement from last year as they beat Hanover 26-21, a team they had lost to 35-18 the season prior.
Hingham’s only loss this year was down to the last second when they lost 26-27 to Abington. The Hingham team came out slow to start the game and trailed 13-14 in the first half; yet, the team fought back and came out hot in the second half where the team looked skilled and composed, but it was too late of a start. The last second loss to Abington was devastating, not only to the hard working players, but also to the coaches who put an incredible amount of time and effort into the football team. Their attitude changed going forward and they have not made the same mistakes that happened in prior games.
Hingham football’s next game against West Springfield completely portrayed their hard work and focus that took place after their loss. Through determination and showcases of talent, Hingham held West Springfield to just one touchdown and an extra point, while Hingham scored 26 points. Not long after, Hingham played an away game against Whitman Hanson, which demonstrated their fiery starts as they had a 50+ yard touchdown on the first play of the game. In the end, Hingham won 49-6, showing their extreme talent that will be tested against Duxbury on Homecoming day at 3:30.
Hingham is preparing for the challenging matchup yet has no doubt that they will come out with the win. Supportingly, James Slankas, a varsity football player, says, “we not only have the determination to win, but also the skill and film to come out on top.” James further shows the confidence that the team contains in their ability to defeat Duxbury while also demonstrating the excitement about the annual Harbormen football homecoming game.
