Saturday the eleventh brought another year of Hingham High’s Homecoming dance, a ticketed event taking place from 7-10 pm in the high school gym and cafeteria. This fun night has been a tradition at Hingham for years, and this year in particular is one that the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) decided to go all out! This year, they included yard games, a DJ, and a photobooth in efforts to increase attendance among all students. With homecoming customs differing from school to school, HHS has always had a lively, positive atmosphere that unites students in a special way on this particular evening. With music, snacks, and everyone dressed up, this dance was an opportunity to see peers in a different way!
On the journey to finding the perfect outfit for the night, students at Hingham High have been swarming all of the sites. They were in search of the makeup, outfit, and hairstyle that would make Homecoming everything that is shown to them in the movies. With this need for perfection comes stress. Freshman Evangeline Cain reported, “I’ve obviously never been to homecoming before so I really didn’t know what to expect. All of these things I had to sort out with my friends, dresses, and plans have been really challenging.” Evangeline is not alone in this thought, as the meaning of the night has been misconstrued over the years. However, this year the dance executed its core goals and was an exciting, welcoming event that positively impacted the community at Hingham High School.
As the years have progressed, this dance meant for everyone had become female dominated. With the trying and buying of dresses so cherished by most, the event had slightly shifted in terms of its goal to unite everyone in the school. This being said, PTO has worked diligently to break the recent stereotype, ensuring the inclusive fun this event had to offer. Their efforts were a success, as more and more of the student body at Hingham High have agreed to join in on the fun! Freshman Duncan Wilder shared, “It was a fun time with my friends and pleasantly surprised me”. With another successful dance in the books, Homecoming 2025 is bound to be a memorable one!
