Hingham High School’s inaugural Harborbowl took place on Thursday, October 9 at 7 pm on the turf. There were two teams, both composed of around 20 senior girls that competed in flag football. Both of these teams had the most contagious energy and excitement. With their spirits and electric personalities, red and black teams were both very driven to win. Dressed in their team shirts, the red team broke through a banner off to a spirited start, while the black team chose a different approach of sauntering onto the field.
The intense game stirred emotions; especially those of the coaches, who were senior varsity football players. Some of the calls were controversial, leading to uproars between the teams, coaches and the referees. At halftime, the cheer team performed flawlessly executing stunts and front handsprings. When the game resumed, the girls continued to viciously fight in an extremely close match. People were shoved, flags were snatched, and many calls were argued. By the end of the second half, the red team was up 7-0. The red team girls managed to defend the end zone, and when the clock hit zero the red team won with a score of 7-0.
While at the game, I talked to the crowd on their feelings towards the Harborbowl and what aspects they enjoyed. Izzie Donnelly, a junior at HHS says, “‘The Harborbowl was a fantastic experience and so much fun! It was so awesome to see everybody come together to celebrate some of our amazing seniors! Can’t wait for next year!’” The school spirit the seniors brought to the game gave a deep sense of community and Hingham pride to the crowd. Other observers agreed with Izzie’s statement, and excitement ran deep within the crowd. Additionally, Hannah Givney, a spectator and senior at HHS believes that, “‘I really enjoyed the announcements and that I think we should put them in in the regular football game because they made the spirit and the community of the games better.’” As Hannah said this, multiple people around me chimed in agreement that this would be a riveting new asset to our football games. Personally, I thought that the announcements were hilarious and added so much comedy to the event!

The Harborbowl was not only a delightful event for the students, but for the parents and staff members as well. Many arrived to watch their friends and family play in the game, demonstrating the strong Hingham community and support. Watching the game evoked feelings of excitement and joy for the spectators, as the seniors finish their time here at Hingham High and move onto bigger things!
