Tucked at the end of the 270s hallway is Mr. George’s classroom, a space that not all students get to experience, but those who do only say good things about his class. Sophomore Jenna Varholak remarks on having Mr. George for World History I, “Mr George is a great teacher! I loved having him last year, it was a great way to start freshman year.” Ben Ferguson, also a sophomore, remarks, “He’s an enthusiastic teacher who’s always fun to be around, and he helped me so much during my first year of high school.” With the abundance of praise Mr. George’s teaching receives, you might wonder: What led him to become such a beloved teacher?
Mr. George’s path to teaching was not traditional; he started working at State Street for 10 years before he was offered an opportunity to teach adults at North Quincy High School, which sparked his love for teaching. His experience sparked a newfound passion for education, which led him to begin his teaching journey at Hingham High School. The 2025-2026 school year marks his 24th year of teaching.
As a father of four kids and a lifelong youth sports coach, Mr. George connects to his students by talking to them as if they were his own kids or players. His classes are filled with thoughtful discussions and meaningful conversation with his students.
Freshman Bo Wilson, currently in his World History I class, says, “I like Mr. George’s class because it allows me to talk to other classmates about their opinions on certain topics. I also like how most of the time in his class we have open ended conversations that make me think deeper about the lesson we are learning”. Bo captures Mr. George’s favorite part of the typical school day: engaging discussion with active student participation. He strives to prepare his students to become strong individuals well-fit for the everchanging world. Teaching has taught him to embrace failure and build confidence. He believes the skills he learned as a teacher would have benefitted him as a teenager when he thought he “knew everything”.
Although Mr. George loves all of his classes, his personal favorites are Personal Finance and World History II. He enjoys the currency and relevancy of the topics included in these courses and also believes everyone should feel empowered taking control over their financial life. He maintains that students should take elective courses they find interesting.
If you’ve ever stepped into Room 270, you’ve likely noticed the writings and quotes that cover the walls. Not all of them are Mr. George’s, as some are contributions from past students. His favorite? “Carpe Diem.” He tries to live by this motto every day, seizing each opportunity to make the most of life. His classroom is also known for developing traditions. For example, Mr. George was the first teacher to incorporate a “Phone Jail” in his classroom. He also has the tradition of playing kickball every spring with his classes. Students enjoy his fun jokes and humor. Gabby Hoffman, a current student in his World History II class, says, “I love World History with Mr. George because he makes class so engaging. I look forward to class each day.”
Mr. George’s final message to students: “Seize the day” and make the most of your high school opportunity!
Fun Fact: Mr. George is a second degree black belt and used to take his World History classes outside for karate!
