As homecoming nears, spirits of all kinds arise in the hearts and minds of Hingham High students. Many students are very excited for the various homecoming events, like the games, the dance, and especially spirit week, which brings students together through funky themes and crazy clothing. Freshman Lila Donoghue comments, “[Spirit week] makes the student body feel more like a community.”
Spirit week is a week where students get to dress up—or dress down—for different themes each day. The themes for this week are USA Day, Class Colors, Country vs. Country Club, Jersey Day, and Red Out.
For USA day, students were instructed to wear colors that represent their country and display patriotism. The hallways bloomed with red, white, and blue, and some students decorated in beaded necklaces and bandannas as accessorization. Some people even painted American flags or patriotic symbols on their faces for the theme. After school, many members of Student Council adorned the halls with multicolored streamers, balloons, and other decorations for the next day, which was Class Colors Day.
On Class Colors Day, each grade dressed in their assigned colors. Freshmen wore white, sophomores wore black, juniors wore blue, and seniors wore red. Student Council had a Deck the Halls activity prior to Class Colors Day where they decorated their hallway with their assigned color. There were so many colors seen throughout the school and it was great to see everyone participating! In particular, the seniors really outshined the other colors with their signature red senior shirts.
Country vs. Country Club day seemed like one of the most popular themes for the week! Students either put on their best rodeo outfits, or their most classy attire. The majority of students dressed up as members of a country club, wearing sweaters around their necks, Polo shirts, khakis, and tennis skirts. The people that chose to wear country clothing wore cowboy boots, bandannas, and some even wore cowboy hats!
Many of the students and faculty represented their favorite sports team by wearing uniforms and jerseys for Jersey Day. Many wore their Hingham sports jerseys while others wore jerseys representing the Celtics, Patriots, Red Sox, and various other teams. The seniors participating in the Harbor Bowl wore their red or black t-shirts to school to show pride in their team.
To end spirit week, the theme was Red Out, a representation of Hingham’s most prominent color. People who wore red displayed pride in their town and school. Red Out was also the day of the pep rally, where a sea of red outfits could be seen throughout the bleachers.
As sophomore Kali Benham says, “It’s a great way to get StuCo points and involve yourself with the community.” Spirit week offers a fun and easy way to earn points for Student Council and show some Hingham pride while doing it!
