As summer ends, school begins, and with that comes homework, what nearly every student dreads after a long day at school. Many parents can see the stress building up in their kids’ bodies during the first couple of weeks of school.
All around the U.S, homework is a very stressful topic for the reason being that you sit through six hours of school and then get assigned more work when you get home. At Hingham High School, the town assigned a few weekends, usually around three, designated for no homework in order to give students a break from the stress..
These no homework weekends usually fall on long weekends and holidays to give the students more time to relax and focus on their personal life without having to worry about anything related to school.
Some people question these weekends and ask the question: Should no homework weekends exist?
Many people say absolutely, but some say no. “Is Homework Necessary?” an article written by Joseph Lathan states, “Numerous studies have shown that regular homework has a hand in improving student performance and connecting students to their learning”. Lathan defends that students should be assigned homework every night. Other studies may show that if there is no homework, students will not be able to study for tests or quizzes the next week.
I asked a couple of students their thoughts on the no-homework weekend. Ryan Kennedy, a junior from Hingham High states, “I have so much free time on the no homework weekends to focus on sports and other things I enjoy, and also helps me relax and spend the time I lost from all of my hours of homework on the weekdays, to hang out with family”.
Cole Mancini, a Junior from Hingham High, also expressed his opinion on no homework weekends, “I like how I can go home and not worry about the overload of homework I have due next week, and to get outside and do the things school takes up during the week”. Hearing what students have to say about these no-homework weekends is very interesting because this is likely how many other students may feel.
So, should homework always be assigned, or should students get a break? This has been an important question for a while now and will likely continue to be a question left unanswered for the time moving forward.
