To some, reading books is seen as a required activity to get a good grade in English-based classes, but it can be so much more. People who read for fun more than necessity can agree that reading can serve as not only a calming activity, but a way to be free from the stress of school and life, even for as little as a few minutes. While this article is mostly acknowledging young adult fantasy and romance, which won’t seem interesting to some, finding a genre to suit every person can make reading more exciting and intriguing; take this as a sign to look around a local library or bookstore and just start reading one book that sounds remotely interesting.
"Shatter Me" by Tahereh Mafi is a fantasy novel part of a greater series with nine books but is enticing enough that it will feel like it is over in a blur. It is about a girl who has the power to harm anybody she touches, involuntarily, and was outcast by society by the people of the dystopian society she lives in. After slowly counted days and hours passed, she is broken free of the quiet silence of her isolation but also the one person who made her feel understood. The freedom is a welcome feeling but at the cost of being seen as a useful pawn in the government’s large plans for reformation of society. It’s an enticing story that will have readers asking to read it again.
